Dear Parents: August 2009
I would like to welcome you and your child to Blackstock Junior High School. My name is Ms. Leal and I have the privilege of being your child’s homeroom teacher for the 2009-2010 school year.
This year your student will benefit from a team of teachers. Their other teachers will be Mrs. Bautista and Mrs. Gardia. With their cooperation and effort, and your support and encouragement, we should have a great and productive year together! We will try to do the best of our ability to ensure that your child will receive the finest education possible. This is a team effort, however, and will require good communication and a strong commitment from all of us: parents, teachers, and student. Let’s all work together to make this the greatest and most exciting school year possible for your child.
In order to guarantee your child, and all the students in our classrooms, the excellent learning climate they deserve, we are utilizing the following Discipline Plan:
OUR PHILOSOPHY:
We believe all of our students can behave appropriately in the classroom. Our goal is to provide a positive learning atmosphere for your child and every child in the class. We believe it is important to be very clear about our expectations of their behavior and responsibilities.
CLASS RULES:
We have five rules that we expect every child to adhere to every day they are in class, whether we are present or not.
1. Students must be prepared for class each day.
Students are responsible for having a pencil, pen, notebook paper, textbook provided by the school, an AR book, and completed homework assignments at the beginning of each class. Students are expected to be on time, line up silently, and quietly walk directly to their assigned seats at the beginning of each class session.
2. Students must treat their peers and adults with respect.
Name calling, “put downs”, racial slurs, laughing at (as opposed to with), harrassment gestures, physical actions and teasing will not be tolerated. A simple way to remember this is: if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.
Use only appropriate language when talking to peers or adults. No profanity is acceptable.
3. Students must treat all school property and the property of others with respect.
Textbooks, desks, chairs, classroom materials, and all other property that does not belong to the student must be treated with care and respect. To this end, students will be held financially responsible for any damage done to other property. Materials of any kind are not to be thrown.
If a student’s personal property has innappropriate markings, including profanity or graffiti, or if it causes any disruption, the materaial will be confiscated and returned to the parents.
4. Students must follow directions the first time they are given.
Students need to be ready to get to work right away. Books need to be taken out and correct pages turned to upon first request. Students need to do this quietly, without talking to their peers. Students need to listen carefully to all instruction and keep their question focused on the material being covered. Asking what time recess or lunch will be are not appropriate questions.
5. Students must always try their best!
Students must take pride in their work. Classwork, homework, and any other work they are asked to do must be completed to the best or their ability. No work will be accepted if we think that it could have been completed better.
IF A STUDENT CHOOSES TO BREAK A RULE:
1st Consequence – Verbal Warning
2nd Consequence – 15 minute Detention, and Think Sheet
3rd Consequence – 30 minute Detention, and Behavior Essay
4th Consequence – Referral to Principal, and Parent contact. The student will lose out on his/her extra priveleges
Severe or Persistent Problems: Immediate Office Referral and Parent Conference
Each infraction will be recorded.
NO HOMEWORK= IMMEDIATE RECESS DETENTION
STUDENTS WHO BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY WILL EARN:
Praise, Special Passes and Class Rewards.
It is in your child’s best interest that we work together with regard to his/her education. If your child is falling behind you will be notified every two weeks, in written form. However, no students should be failing our class. It is also extremely important that you check and initial your child’s Student Agenda nightly for homework and ongoing assignments and keeping Agendas up to date, with parents initials. We have already discussed this plan with your child, but we would appreciate you reviewing it with him/her before signing and returning the form attached. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Ms. Leal
